Tips You Actually Haven't Heard Before

5. Dress for Success

One of the most bizarre tips regarding my webmaster career was given to me years ago by my parents. They always told me to "dress for success." Though this is a huge clich in today's business world, it's more true than ever before. I thought they were over-simplifying things at the time, but now I've learned that, yes, parents are often right.

For the first few months that I was working online, I attempted to live what I thought the blogger/webmaster was supposed to live -- dressed in my PJs, not giving a thought to my appearance. Subconsciously, though, the principles my parents told me were hard at work -- it was hard for me to take myself seriously because I didn't feel serious. You have to be serious to get serious results.

Obviously, though, there has to be a happy middle-ground between the PJs and the tuxedo. Just dress for success.

4. Keep Office Clean

In line with Tip 5, keeping the office clean has an outlandish impact on moral and attitude. Living and working in a space that gives the psychological "aroma" of failure will do nothing but encourage failure. Fifteen-minutes of picking up can equal hours of increased efficiency.

3. Get Emotional Support

The journey to earning an income online is long and lonely. And it's hard. It's hard. It's a long process. And it will often get lonely.

To fight off the AdSense blues, just buddy up with someone else who is working on their own online project. Find a support group. Join a forum, email a webmaster -- get emotional support. Millions have gone through a lot of pain while putting their blogs together -- you don't have to.

All the drama aside, I still loved every moment of blogging -- even during the lonely times. ;-)

2. Be An Expert

I'm fairly certain that over half of the people who decided to make money online have made their first project on making money online a website teaching how to make money online. That's like me trying to teach calculus -- it just isn't going to happen. You have to know to teach.

A friend of mine once told me that BSing only works to a certain extent. If you really don't know what you're talking about, you can't fool everyone for long. This is incredibly true -- especially in the Internet world of text.

When looking for your topic to write about, make sure you know it inside and out. Chances are, your expertise is rare, meaning that you'll stand out in the crowd and will have less competition to getting to the top of Google. This means bucks coming in later on.

Be an expert.

1. Establish Goals

By far, no holds bar, the most important tip I wish I had been told was to set my goals. My first websites had no goal in mind. With no goal, I wasn't planning my Strange Change Machine to achieve the goal -- I couldn't achieve because I hadn't established a goal. You can't win a battle unless you fight, and you can't fight unless you know who your trying to fight.

Trying to make money online is like trying to out-box a ghost. It just won't work. Set your goals and your goals will have a better shot at being achieved.

He knows his business, and goal-setting is definitely one of them. Steve currently makes about 800 grand per year with his blog. Don't focus on tomorrow -- focus on today and how it relates to tomorrow. Unless you do that, you can never get to tomorrow's goal. However, by focusing on both today and tomorrow, the world you want can be won -- it can be achieved.

And there we have it. Following these basic principles might seem a little too obvious. But they most certainly aren't -- they're essential to doing well online, or anywhere for that matter. Dress for success, keep the workplace tidy, surround yourself with people who support you, be an expert and accomplish your goals. Success will then be found.
